Introduction – Welcome to the Marakele Safari Experience
There’s something unforgettable about the Marakele Safari experience in South Africa. It’s a place where the drama of the wild blends seamlessly with luxury and serenity. I discovered this during an April trip that began with a 20-hour flight from Mumbai and a 4-hour drive north from Johannesburg to the remote and majestic Marakele National Park in Limpopo Province.
From the moment I turned off the highway and into the untamed bush, I knew I was in for something truly special.

The Scenic Route – Gateway to Marakele National Park
After leaving Johannesburg, I drove toward Polokwane, soaking in the beauty of open landscapes and rural farmlands. As I passed Hoopsdal Police Station, I knew I was close. Mac, the security guard at the gate, welcomed me with a smile and an indemnity form—an official reminder that once inside, wildlife has the right of way.
The next seven kilometers to the lodge were on rough terrain, definitely not designed for my Mercedes C-Class. As I maneuvered through the track, signs of wildlife were immediate: toppled trees and fresh elephant dung.
Face-to-Face with the Wild – A True Marakele Safari Encounter
Soon after, I came across a calm female elephant chomping leaves, totally undisturbed by my presence. It was the perfect beginning to the Marakele Safari experience—raw, real, and powerful.
At the lodge, I was warmly welcomed with cold towels and refreshing drinks. The property was more than I expected. Nestled at the foot of the Waterberg Mountains, Marataba Safari Lodge blends luxury with nature in the most elegant way.

Luxury in the Wild – Inside the Tented Suites
My suite was a spacious, circular tent with panoramic views of the river and mountains. Inside, the king-size bed, rain shower, and freestanding bathtub facing the bush made it feel like a sanctuary. The outdoor shower, however, was my favorite—nothing beats bathing with a view of elephants in the distance.
The lodge has 15 tented suites and is family-friendly, offering childcare services, a pool area, and family rooms. As I walked to my suite, I saw impalas leaping through the bush—a moment straight out of a documentary.
Game Drives & Boat Safaris – Exploring Marakele’s Rich Biodiversity
My first game drive was guided by Hein, a knowledgeable and calm ranger. We encountered white rhinos, wildebeest, and impalas mid-rut. The highlight? A tense standoff with a bull elephant who approached our vehicle with curiosity. Hein cut the engine and softly spoke to the elephant until it wandered off—an intense but beautiful moment that defines the Marakele Safari experience.
Later that evening, I boarded Ms. Mara, a custom safari boat moored on a quiet dam. We sipped sundowners while the Kransberg mountains glowed in pinks and blues. The peace and beauty of the scene were beyond words.

Evening Magic & Shared Stories
Back at the lodge, lanterns flickered, fires warmed the air, and dinner was served under the stars. I chatted with fellow travelers, each sharing their own adventures. The meal—a rich, juicy steak—was one of the best I’ve had on safari.
Lions at Dawn – Morning Highlights in Marakele
At 5 a.m., I awoke to the roar of lions in the distance. Hein gathered us quickly, and within an hour we had found the pride—two males and two females. One lioness was in heat, and the males, eager to mate, constantly disrupted the females’ hunting. It was an extraordinary moment to observe the complex dynamics of a pride.
Marataba Trails Lodge – Going Off the Grid
Later, I visited Marataba Trails Lodge, now called Marataba Mountain Lodge. Perched in the mountains, the lodge offers walking safaris only, with no electricity and only solar lights. It’s limited to guests 16 and older, ensuring a tranquil, focused experience in nature.
The next morning, we packed breakfast in our knapsacks and set off on foot with two guides. We crossed rivers, navigated rocky trails, and stopped frequently to admire wildlife up close. There were no engines to scare the animals, just silence and connection.
